Program 2, March 24:
Arthur Russell, Instrumentals directed by Peter Gordon
Mary Halvorson, Septet nos. 30-33

Curated by Nick Hallett

Co-presented with Carnegie Hall as part of the 2012 American Mavericks Festival

The Kitchen dips into the Music Program archive and extends its envelope-pushing legacy to a new generation with this weekend of shared double bills. Launching the event is William Basinski’s ambient electronic opus Vivian & Ondine, which identifies the haunting materiality of sound through the physical process of tape loop manipulation, with light art by Seth Kirby and Brock Monroe. Sharing the evening, Tristan Perich—in his Kitchen debut—demonstrates his unique 1-Bit universe, mixing custom-built microchips and harpsichord performed by Daniel Walden.

The second evening begins with a new septet convened by Brooklyn-based guitarist Mary Halvorson, who effortlessly connects jazz, pop, and experimental strategies. The septet includes Kirk Knuffke (cornet), Greg Ward (alto saxophone), Ingrid Laubrock (tenor saxophone), Jacob Garchik (trombone), Mary Halvorson (guitar), John Hebert (bass) and Tom Rainey (drums). The weekend culminates with work by Arthur Russell, former Kitchen Music Director and protean composer who set the contemporary standard for fluidity between musical genres as he moved freely among avant-garde composition, traditional songwriting, and commercial disco. His Instrumentals, which played at The Kitchen in 1975, and was described by The New York Times as “full of stirring melody, part Copland and part western movie soundtrack,” will be given a new reading directed by composer Peter Gordon, a friend and collaborator of Russell’s. Musicians appearing on Instrumentals include Ernie Brooks* (bass guitar), Peter Gordon* (saxophones, organ), Zach Layton (guitar), Katie Porter (bass clarinet), Bill Ruyle* (mallets, percussion), Elio Villafranca (piano), Alex Waterman (cello), and Peter Zummo* (trombone).

*member of Instrumentals ensemble (1975-1978)

Featuring:

New Reality Band (Nick Hallett and Zach Layton) and SUNWATCHERS

Sun Watchers is an improvisational new-music cooperative dedicated to divining the common sonic and spiritual ground shared by the great progenitors of free jazz, psych rock, punk and minimalist classical. The group’s fluid ranks include current and former members of NYMPH, Arthur Doyle’s New Quiet Screamers, Gamelan Kusama Laras, Young People, Dark Meat, Dan Hole Pond, Leg and Pants Dance Theeater, We Vs. The Shark and countless other acts of variable temperament, affect and geographic base of operation. Tonight, they perform segments of their monolithic composition Golden Shafts of Light, a drone-piece whose recorded execution stands as a sort of build-your-own-sound-installation kit, and spans three years, multiple cities, dozens of musicians and thirteen compact discs.

FAIR USE
A New York-based trio founded in 2005 by musicians Zach Layton and Matthew Ostrowski and video artist R. Luke DuBois, based on the use of cinema as raw materials for experimental live performance. A typical Fair Use performance consists of the trio performing one or more culturally significant films live in their entirety in a condensed time frame. Each performance uses the picture and soundtrack of the film as the sole materials for an improvised set, which interrogates our cinematic memories through frenetic audio and visual processing and re-narration of the cinematic object. As their performances unfold, the trio evokes their own memories and impressions of the film as a highly subjective lens, for example by focusing on iconic moments in the films and lingering on them, or massively collapsing long sequences into mere seconds. Fair Use looks at our accelerating culture through the electronic performance and remixing of cinema, presenting classic films through time compression and audio and visual manipulation.

It explores all the possible ways of exhibiting and reading Radio and Sound art. The project is also complemented by an (international) platform for the discussion of meanings, contextualization, artistic research and the exchange of sound art works.
