powderspeaker/fluidspeaker

ariel efron, zach layton

Two hanging loudspeakers, filled with white powder and black ferrofluid, respectively hang from the ceiling, vibrating. Video cameras are pointed at the speakers and their images will be projected against the adjacent wall. The projection enables the viewer to see the complex patterns created by low frequency waveforms pumping through the powder and fluid in the speaker cones. The amplitude of the sound will be controlled by the viewer's proximity to the installation which is sensed ultrasonically. Thus the viewer's presence becomes a part of the overall field of sonic vibration in the room.
